The tea lights are turned from manzanita root. Each is unique and may include a rock or two. The colors of manzanita vary from a creamy ivory to an almost black. There are 52 species of manzanita native to North America. They range from Alaska down through California and well into Mexico. In California, manzanita is known as “chaparral” and is regularly bulldozed or burned out from under trees to help control forest fires. Its roots are tough and capable of growing around rocks in the poor soil where it thrives.
